This photograph was taken in Geneva in the mid 80's and I originally titled it "The Watcher". In preparing it for upload to the web I decided to do a little research. The statue is by the Swiss sculptor Heinz Schwarz (1920-1994). It depicts a young girl who is standing naked, exposed to the whole world. I remember choosing to shoot it from the rear out of "respect" (although I had no idea why at the time) and caught this image of a young man passing in front of her with his eyes cast away from her nakedness. I have now discovered that Schwarz dedicated this work as a symbol of solidarity for women and girls – especially those forced into prostitution – all over the world. I am eternally grateful for my unconscious decision to capture this image with humility.
