In 1925 John Ringling, of circus fame, hired architect John H. Phillips to design and build a museum on his Sarasota property to house his growing collection of art.. What Phillips designed was a Renaissance-style Museum in a U-shaped pink palace with 21 galleries to house Ringling’s treasure trove of paintings and art objects. The Museum’s Courtyard embodied the ideals of the Renaissance garden. This shot was taken from within one of the long loggias that flank the central courtyard. The late afternoon sun and it's accompanying shadows offer a quiet reflective moment for the passers by.
