The Bridge Of Sighs
The Bridge of Sighs is located in Venice, Italy. The enclosed bridge is made of white limestone and has windows with stone bars. It was built in 1600 and passes over the Rio di Palazzo and connects the New Prison to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. The legend goes that the view from the Bridge of Sighs was the last view of Venice that convicts saw before their imprisonment and comes from the suggestion that prisoners would sigh at their final view of beautiful Venice through the window before being taken down to their cells. This was my second trip to Venice and both times I was drawn to photograph this bit of history. A sense of the impending doom the prisoners must have felt is palpable when you cross the river on the inside of the bridge.
